Story of Recovery from a Manic Episode

Chaim

Chaim is 19-years-old. He is learning in beis medrash. Chaim has always had mood swings, but his mood swings had become more extreme. Chaim started doing risky behavior, like getting drunk, which was followed by not sleeping for two weeks. His classmates noticed that he was talking nonstop and seemed to be unusually sociable and funny. Chaim’s mania escalated; one night he was riding his bicycle recklessly and crashed into a traffic light pole. Chaim’s bike was damaged, he broke his leg, fought with the Hatzolo members who came to the accident, and subsequently was hospitalized in a mental hospital. He was stabilized by the mental hospital. Upon release, Chaim came to Pesach Tikvah to meet with a psychiatrist and therapist. The psychiatrist and therapist worked together to create a treatment plan for Chaim. With medication and therapy, Chaim has remained stable and is able to productively learn in beis medrash.
